Preventing lead poisoning from drinking water is one of the few issues in our society that is completely fixable…and the solution is simple: get the lead out! Until the root causes particularly lead piping are eliminated, more robust public education is needed. Freshwater Future has been filling in the gap left by governmental oversight and acting as a watchdog when it comes to lead in drinking water for Great Lakes communities. Whether that means partnering to open the Flint Community Lab, distributing education materials to affected communities, or advocating directly to decision makers, we have learned a lot from working to protect our communities from lead poisoning through grassroots advocacy. In this session, we hope to foster collective solutions and catalyze action on public education strategies that ensure residents know how to protect themselves and their families from lead in drinking water.
